At The Citadel

Woods Tea Co. is in Charleston, SC for a show at the military school, The Citadel. It’s gloriously warm and humid down here, so different from the frost-bitten morning I left Vermont. They’ve put us up in a beautiful old building on campus, and I watched the cadets drill on the campus green from my window this morning, before venturing out for my own walk. Their precision is captivating. And walking around among them, I see such intense focus and self-discipline, which I admire. I wondered things, the quirky kind of things I wonder: do they drill in the rain? how many uniforms do they each get, and do they have to launder them themselves? do they ever run into each other when they make those starched, right angles while wheeling around campus, facing seriously forward? why do some of them always run and others only walk fast? can they have a beer? where are all the young women? I saw very few.

At any rate, I hope they enjoy our show tonight, and I’m very glad we came down here. Charleston is a lovely old city. We’ve been very warmly welcomed here at The Citadel, and I would love to come back.
